How to Choose a Mobile App Development Company: Questions to Ask Before Signing

A practical guide to evaluating app developers on skills, process, ownership and support.

An app project usually runs for months and your app will need updates for years. That makes your choice of development partner as important as the idea itself. Here is how to evaluate app development companies beyond the portfolio slide.

Know What You Are Buying

Before speaking to anyone, write a one-page brief:

  • The problem the app solves and who will use it.
  • The key features for the first version.
  • Whether you need Android, iOS or both.
  • Any systems the app must connect to, such as a CRM, ERP or payment gateway.
  • Your budget range and target launch date.

A good company will refine this brief with you. A poor one will simply quote on it without asking questions.

Evaluate Real Experience

  • Ask for apps you can download and use, not just screenshots.
  • Check ratings and recent reviews on the Play Store and App Store.
  • Look for experience with similar features: payments, maps, offline sync or real-time chat.
  • Ask what went wrong on a past project and how they handled it. Honest answers are a good sign.

Understand Their Technical Approach

  • Will they build native apps or use a cross-platform framework such as React Native or Flutter? Why?
  • How will the backend and admin panel be built and hosted?
  • How do they handle security, including login, data encryption and API protection?
  • How do they test on different devices, especially budget Android phones that many Indian users carry?
  • How do they plan for app store guidelines and approvals?

Check the Process

A professional team will explain how work moves from idea to launch:

  • Discovery and requirement workshops.
  • Wireframes and clickable prototypes.
  • Design approval.
  • Development in short sprints with regular demos.
  • Testing, beta release and store submission.

Ask how often you will see working builds. Regular demos keep surprises to a minimum.

Clarify Ownership and Accounts

  • You should own the source code and receive it in a repository you control.
  • Developer accounts on Google Play and the App Store should be in your company's name.
  • Cloud hosting, domain and third-party service accounts should belong to you.
  • Agree on intellectual property terms in the contract.
"Your app is a business asset. Make sure the keys are in your hands, not someone else's."

Talk About Money Clearly

  • Is the quote fixed price or time and material?
  • What is included: backend, admin panel, testing, store submission?
  • How are change requests priced?
  • What is the payment schedule, and is it tied to milestones?

Ask About Life After Launch

  • How long is the warranty period for bug fixes?
  • What do maintenance plans cover, such as OS updates and security patches?
  • How quickly do they respond to critical issues?
  • Can they help with analytics and improvement after launch?

Red Flags

  • No questions about your users or business goals.
  • A price given within minutes, without understanding the scope.
  • Refusal to share source code or set up accounts in your name.
  • No testing plan.
  • Promises of an unrealistically short timeline.

A Simple Scoring Method

Score each shortlisted company out of five on relevant experience, technical approach, communication, transparency on cost and post-launch support. The highest total, not the lowest price, usually indicates the best fit.
