Website Development Cost in India: What Businesses Pay For

A plain breakdown of what drives the price of a business website, and how to budget without overpaying.

Ask five agencies to quote for "a website" and you may get five very different numbers. That is not always because someone is overcharging. A website can mean a five-page brochure built on a template, or a custom-designed platform with a content management system, integrations and multiple languages. The price follows the scope.

This guide explains what you are actually paying for, gives indicative market ranges, and shows how to compare quotes fairly.

Indicative Price Ranges in India

The ranges below are broad market indications, not fixed prices. Your final cost depends on the scope you agree with your developer.

  • Basic business website (5–10 pages, template-based design, contact form): roughly ₹15,000 to ₹60,000.
  • Custom-designed business website (original design, CMS, SEO setup, 10–30 pages): roughly ₹60,000 to ₹3,00,000.
  • Advanced corporate website (multiple languages, integrations with CRM or ERP, custom functionality, large content migration): roughly ₹2 lakh to ₹8 lakh or more.
  • E-commerce stores and web applications are priced differently, because they involve payments, inventory, user accounts and business logic.

What Drives the Cost

Design: template or custom

A template gives you a ready layout that is adapted to your brand. It is faster and cheaper. A custom design starts from your audience and goals, and every page is designed for your content. If your website is a key sales tool, custom design usually pays for itself through better enquiries.

Number and Type of Pages

Ten simple text pages take far less effort than ten pages with interactive calculators, comparison tables or product configurators. Ask your developer to list every page and template in the proposal so you know exactly what is included.

Content Management

Most businesses want to update text, images, blogs and job openings without calling a developer. A content management system (CMS) adds setup and training effort but saves money over the life of the site.

Integrations

Connecting your website to a CRM, WhatsApp, a payment gateway, a booking system or your ERP adds development and testing time. Integrations are also where hidden costs appear later, so make sure they are written into the scope.

Performance, SEO and Security

A website that loads quickly on mid-range Android phones, is set up correctly for search engines and is protected against common attacks takes extra care. This includes image optimisation, clean URL structure, meta tags, structured data, sitemaps, SSL and secure form handling. Cheap quotes often skip this work.

Content and Photography

Who writes the copy? Who supplies product photos? Professional copywriting and photography are often quoted separately. If you supply content late, the project slows down, which can increase cost.

Ongoing Costs to Budget For

The build is only part of the cost. Plan for these recurring items:

  • Domain name: usually around ₹800 to ₹1,500 per year for .com or .in domains.
  • Hosting: from a few thousand rupees a year on shared hosting to more for cloud hosting with better speed and reliability.
  • SSL certificate: often free with modern hosting, paid for some business needs.
  • Maintenance: updates, backups, security patches and small content changes, usually charged monthly or annually.
  • Marketing: SEO, ads and content, if you want the website to bring in new business rather than just exist.
"A website is not a one-time expense. It is an asset that needs care, like any other part of your business."

How to Compare Quotes Fairly

When quotes vary widely, put them side by side and check:

  • Is the number of pages and templates the same in each quote?
  • Is the design custom or template-based?
  • Does it include CMS setup and training?
  • Are SEO basics, speed optimisation and security included?
  • Who owns the code, design files and domain after launch?
  • How many rounds of revisions are included?
  • What happens after launch, and what does support cost?

The lowest quote often leaves out work that you will need to pay for later.

How to Keep Costs Under Control

  • Write down your goals first: more enquiries, online sales, recruitment or credibility.
  • Start with the pages that matter most and add more later.
  • Prepare content and images before development begins.
  • Agree on a fixed scope with clear deliverables and a change-request process.
  • Choose a technology your team can maintain.
